Its been awhile since I took a stroll in Downtown, Kingston
The stench, the people, the cartman, the hustle and the 'bustle'
The once majestic buildings now stand in ruins, stories etched in the walls, stories I am dying to hear, stories that will never be told.
Its been awhile.............
Its been awhile since I have given a homeless person a 'smalls'
Its been awhile since I thought of any other than my immediate family.
Walking the streets of Downtown Kingston, I am look at hunger and desperation on the faces of the innocent.
"Juice and chips miss?"
" No babes"
"Miss beg yuh a smalls nuh?"
"Nah nutten today enuh"
"Aight then, tek care yuh hear"
"Yeah man, blessings"
Lie!!!
I had a smalls
Why had I not given it to this child whose bare feet walks on the hot asphalt?
I couldn't find one damn reason.
I continued walking, thinking, grieving then I look up see the sign King Street and under it a old lady sitting with a bag of sweets perched on a cardboard box.
The smell of piss perfumes the air, Damian Marley's 'Welcome to Jamrock' starts playing from a parked car and a lawyer in court attire hops from a 2012 Audi.
Its been awhile.......
Its been awhile since someone really cared.....
Its been awhile since the Government...........
Scratch that
I realize we love blame the Government fi everyting.......
Its been awhile since we realized that WE are the change........Its been awhile since we realized we haffi help ourselves before anybody can help us
